About Printing

Here is some information about printing from the great work of Herbert Simon which he has published with the name "Introduction To Printing: The craft of Letter Press". Please feel free to post your comment on this book or on this blog post.

Printers measures linear width in 'pica ems'. An em is 12 points, the equivalent of one-sixth of an inch. There are
therefore six 'pica ems' to the inch. If it has been decided to set a line four inches wide then the movable piece on the composing stick must be set at precisely 24 em from the right hand edge.
This setting must be accurate: to ensure accuracy it is well to be provided with a series of setting rules which are, in effect, guages. Most useful would be a series of stting rules starting at two inches (12 em) and going up by one third of an inch (2 em) to six inches (36 em).

Quote of The Day:
Believe in yourself! Have faith in your abilities! Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own powers you cannot be successful or happy.
(Norman Vincent Peale)

Printing is an art more than a knowledge. Printing is a practical work. A knowledge can be learned from good books or good teacher delivers it in a most convenient manner, but an art especially printing can be best learned in practice.
